The image editor tools

Image Editor tools are activated by buttons found in the horizontal toolbar at the top of the page. Many functions associated with the buttons can also be found in the  EDIT menu of the image editor.

The tools are briefly explained...

Open: Click here to load an image file in TIF, PDF, or BMP file format into the image editor. When you open a PDF file , that PDF will automatically be converted to TIF graphic format.
Save: Saves the active document open in the image editor. If you want to save the image file under a different name, use the menu command ☰ FILE / Save as .
Scan: Starts a new scanning process using the connected scanner. See also: Scanning sheet music
Note recognition: Click here to start note recognition. If a sheet music template is loaded as an active document in the image editor, it will be recognized. See also: Note recognition
Zoom: Increases or decreases the view size of the loaded image document. To zoom in, click with the left mouse button , to zoom out with the right mouse button . If your computer mouse has a scroll wheel , you can also use it to zoom in/out- Hold down the button and turn the scroll wheel.
Print: Click here to print the active image document.
Back page: Typically, your sheet music templates that you open in the image editor will have multiple pages. You can easily browse through your sheet music templates using the page forward/ back buttons.
Page forward: Opens the next page of your image document (see above)
Rotate 90° to the left: This is a very important function of the image editor. Will e.g. If, for example, landscape-format music books are scanned, they must be inserted into the scanner rotated by 90°. Before the note recognition, it is therefore necessary to first turn such note scans "the right way up" so that they can be "read" by SmartScore. See also Rotate sheet music pages by 90°
Rotate 90° right: Rotates the currently visible note page 90° to the right in increments (see above and Rotate note pages 90° )
Select: The selection tool is another central tool in image editing in the SmartScore image editor that allows you to optimize the quality of the recognition result. With this tool you mark areas within the document in order to... d. R. to delete from the sheet music. These can be areas or just individual notation elements that cannot be recognized (e.g. handwritten drawings, embedded graphics, headers or footnotes, etc.) or should not be recognized. You can also freely draw and draw lines in the image editor. See also: Retouching sheet music pages
Crop: This useful tool is used to quickly reduce a sheet of music to the portion that is essential for recognition. Any area of the page that falls outside a frame defined with the selection tool will be removed when you click the crop tool. See also: Cropping sheet music pages
Straighten: Crooked scanned music or imported music graphics where the music image is not exactly aligned are the main cause of unsatisfactory music recognition . With the straighten tool you have an ingenious tool in the image editor to correct such "mistakes". Repeat scanning can often be avoided. See also: Straighten sheet music pages
Invert: When using older scanners, it was occasionally found that they reversed the image polarity. This resulted in the scanned image showing the page background in black and the notation itself in white. This color reversal can be corrected using the Invert button. Experience has shown that this phenomenon no longer occurs with current scanner models
Delete page: It often happens that imported sheet music documents contain pages that do not contain any sheet music (title pages, tables of contents, editorial pages, etc.). With this tool you can easily remove such sites. See also: Tips for image editing
Drawing: With this tool you can freely draw in your music templates. If the drawing color is changed to white using the eraser tool , the drawing tool is used to delete unwanted image elements. See also: Retouching sheet music pages
Lines: You can use the line tool to trace missing or broken bar lines or staff lines in individual cases. Retouch sheet music pages
Drawing Weight: Clicking this button allows you to choose the brush or line thickness for the drawing/line tool from a pop-up menu.
Eraser: The eraser is actually a black and white toggle. If the button is active, you draw or draw lines in white color. See also: Retouching sheet music pages
Black and white conversion: By cleverly adjusting the threshold value during manual black and white conversion, sheet music pages that are scanned or imaged too brightly or too dark can be made more "readable" for SmartScore. See: Black and white conversion and threshold value
Undo: By clicking this button you can undo the last editing step carried out. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut + .
Redo: The last step you undid can be redone using this button. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut + .

We recommend …

Reviewing and/or editing scanned or imported sheet music templates can help significantly improve the quality of sheet music recognition. That's why you should always open your graphic sheet music in the image editor before starting the recognition process.
